About
Sacral Neuromodulation for Bladder & Bowel Control
Struggling with overactive bladder or bowel incontinence? Sacral Nerve Stimulation (also known as Sacral Neuromodulation or SNM) is a proven therapy that helps restore communication between the brain and pelvic nerves to improve bladder and bowel function.

Conditions treated with SNM include:
Overactive Bladder (OAB)
Urge and mixed urinary incontinence
Chronic urinary retention
Fecal incontinence (FI)

What Is Sacral Neuromodulation?
Sacral Neuromodulation (SNM) is an advanced treatment that uses gentle electrical pulses to stimulate the sacral nerves—the nerves located at the base of your spine. These nerves control signals between your bladder, bowel, and brain. When this communication is disrupted, it can lead to:
-
Overactive bladder (OAB)
-
Urinary incontinence
-
Urinary retention
-
Fecal incontinence
SNM helps reset this communication, giving patients better control and relief from frustrating symptoms.

How Does It Work?
Sacral Neuromodulation involves a two-step process:
-
Trial phase – A temporary device is placed to test how well the therapy improves your symptoms. This can often be done in the office.
-
Implant phase – If the trial is successful, a small permanent device is implanted under the skin to deliver ongoing stimulation. This is done in outpatient surgery.
This therapy is typically recommended after lifestyle changes and medications have not provided relief.
